Home > Zinc whisker

A zinc whisker is a small filament of zinc, elongating from a galvanized (electroplated) metal surface at a rate of up to 1 mm per year. The elongation mechanism is unknown, and starts after an "incubation period" ranging from days to years. The diameter of zinc whiskers if only a few micrometres.

Zinc whiskers can lead to short circuits if they "grow" long enough to touch other conducting metal structures.

Several methods exist for zinc whisker removal. The most popular option is a specialised depilatory cream which, when rubbed vigorously into the metal surface, eliminates the growths.
