Zinc oxide is a chemical compound with formula Zn O, that is nearly insoluble in water but soluble in acids or alkalis. It occurs as white hexagonal crystals or a white powder commonly known as zinc white. It remains white when exposed to hydrogen sulfide or ultraviolet light. Crystalline zinc oxide exhibits the piezoelectric effect, is luminescent, and is light sensitive.

Zinc oxide occurs in nature as the mineral zincite. Zinc peroxide, ZnO2 .˝ H2O, is a white to yellow powder used in antiseptic ointments.

Zinc white is used as a pigment in paintFor information on the U. borough, see Paint, Pennsylvania. Paint is the general term for a family of products used to protect and add color to an object or surface by covering it with a pigmented coating. As a verb, painting is the application of paint.s; less opaque than lithoponeLithopone is a white pigment, a mixture of barium sulphate and zinc sulphide. It is used in interior paints and in some enamels.. It is also used as a filler for rubberThis article is about the material rubber, for other uses see Rubber (disambiguation Rubber is an elastic hydrocarbon polymer which occurs as a milky emulsion (known as latex) in the sap of a number of plants but can also be produced synthetically. The ma goods and in coatings for paperPaper is a thin, flat material produced by the compression of fibres. The fibers used are usually natural and based upon cellulose. The most common material is wood pulp from pulpwood (largely softwood) trees such as pines, but other vegetable fiber mater. Chinese white is a special grade of zinc white used in artistAn artist is someone who employs creative talent to produce works of art. The term may be used in connection with any branch of the arts—for example music, literature, and theatre—but more commonly refers to an individual who practises the visual arts ors' pigmentIn biology, pigment is any material resulting in color in plant or animal cells which is the result of selective absorption. Some biological material has so-called structural color, which is the result of selective reflection or iridescence, usually dones. Because it absorbs ultraviolet light, zinc oxide can be used in ointments, creams, and lotionA lotion is a salve used when cleaning or freshening skin. There are many brands of lotion, some are manufactured all over the world. From emulsion of water, oil, and milk, a simple lotion can be produced.s to protect against sunburnA sunburn is a radiation burn to the skin produced usually by overexposure to the ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun. A similar burn can be produced by overexposure to other sources of UV, such as tanning lamps and welding arcs. Exposure of the skin.

Zinc oxide is a semiconductor with a direct band gap of 3.2 eV. A common application is in gas sensors. As of 2003, it has been utilized in recent research to build blue LEDs and transparent TFTs.
