After Zico retired from international football in 1990, he became the first director general of Brazilian National Secretary of Sports, and joined the Sumitomo Metal Industries soccer division (the present Kashima Antlers) in 1991. He helped developed the formerly small club from Kashima-cho (present-day Kashima city) into one of Japan's best sides. Zico retired as a player 1994 and became the technical adviser of Kashima Antlers.
Zico is currently the head coach of the Japanese National Team, succeeding Philippe Troussier .
However, there are rumours he may quit retirement to join English non-league side Garforth Town F.C. as player/coach.
