Developed by Ford of Europe in the late 1980s/early 1990s it was intended to replace the older Ford Pinto and CVH single overhead cam engines.
The Zetec is also the basis for the Formula Ford 2000 series from 2003 where it replaces the older Ford Pinto and Ford Kent.
The engine fits the Ford T9 , Cd4E and MTX-75 gearboxes using the same bell bolt pattern as the XflowXflow or Crossflow is a name used for the redesigned Ford Kent engine. Ford engines..
It first appeared in 1992, powering the fourth generation of the European Ford Escort and OrionThe Ford Orion is a 4-door sedan automobile model introduced by Ford's European division in 1983. The Orion was initially intended to be a more upmarket, sedan derivative of the third generation Escort aimed at company buyers. In order not to spoil the Or. It was originally known as the "Zeta" engine before Italian car maker LanciaLancia is an Italian automobile manufacturer founded in 1906, part of the Fiat group since 1969. During the 1980s the company cooperated with Saab Automobile, with the Lancia Delta being marketed as Saab 600 in Sweden. Saab also helped with the logistics threatened to sue Ford for trademark infringement as it already owned the name. Ford hurriedly renamed the engine "Zetec".
Early versions of the engine (prior to mid 19981998 was a common year starting on Thursday (see link for calendar), and was designated the International Year of the Ocean''. Events January January 1998 A massive ice storm, caused by El Nino, strikes New England, southern Ontario and Quebec, resulting) came complete with self-adjusting hydraulic valves. This help prevented the notorious valve tapping (on the CVH) but caused other issues. The biggest problem was that a special Ford formulation of oil was required otherwise the valves tended to stick. Similarly, if the engine wasn't regularly revved above 4000 RPM, the valves tended to stick then too. For these reasons, conventional tappets with shims were introduced in 1998.
Later versions of the engine are known as the Zetec-E. The main difference is a two piece crankcase which helps damp out noise and vibration.
The more advanced Zetec-SE was developed with the help of YamahaYamaha Motor Corporation is a motorized vehicle-producing company, initially part of the Yamaha Corporation. After expanding Yamaha Corporation into the world's biggest piano maker, former Yamaha CEO Genichi Kawakami took Yamaha into the field of motorize under the "Sigma" codename. Designed for Ford's smaller models, it was intended to replace the older HCS and smaller capacity CVH units.
Zetec-SE first appeared in 1995, in the fourth-generation Fiesta in 1.25L capacity, it grew to 1.4L, 1.6L and 1.7L forms to power the Ford Focus and Ford Puma. This engine included many "firsts" such as a plastic inlet manifold, a "ladder" style main bearing and crankcase assembly, and big-end bearing caps which are forged in one piece and subsequently split.
Thanks to the input of Yamaha, this version of the engine is a decent performing, high revving engine, much like a motorbike engine...
