Binomial name
Danio rerio
(Hamilton-Buchanan, 1822)
The Zebra Danio or Zebrafish (Brachydanio rerio or Danio rerio) is a tropical fish belonging to the minnow family ( Cyprinidae). Originating in Eastern India, it grows to about 2 inches (6 cm) and lives for around 5 years. There are long-finned and other color forms of this danio.

Like other danios it is omnivorous and a peaceful fish that gets along well with other fish in community tanks. A schooling fish, it prefers to be in groups of 6 or more. Zebra Danios prefer water with a 6.0–8.0 pHAlternate uses: see Ph pH (potential (of) hydrogen) is a measure of the concentration of hydrogen ions (H+) in a solution and, therefore, its acidity or alkalinity. The concept was introduced by S. Sorensen in 1909. The p stands for the German potenz mean, a water hardness of up to 5.0–19.0 dGHDegrees of General Hardness (dGH) is a unit of water hardness, specifically of General Hardness. General Hardness is a measure for the number of calcium and magnesium cations per volume of water. 1 dGH corresponds to 10 mg of calcium oxide or magnesium ox, and a temperature range of 64–74° FThis article is about the temperature scale; see also Fahrenheit graphics API. Fahrenheit is a temperature scale named after the German physicist Gabriel Fahrenheit ( 1686 1736), who proposed it in 1724. In this scale, the freezing point of water is 32 de (18–24° CThe degree Celsius (°C) is a unit of temperature named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius ( 1701 1744), who first proposed it in 1742. The Celsius temperature scale was designed so that the freezing point of water is 0 degrees, and the boiling po).

Males have gold stripes between the blue stripes and females have silver stripes instead of gold. An egg-scatterer, danios produce around 100 eggs in a single spawningThis article is about biological spawning. See also spawning (computer gaming) and Spawn (comics). Zebra Danios serve as a common and useful model organismA model organism is one that is extensively studied to understand particular biological phenomena, with the expectation that discoveries made in the model organism will provide insight into the workings of other organisms. This works because evolution reu for studies of vertebratePetromyzontidae ( lampreys) Placodermi extinct Chondrichthyes (cartilaginous fish) Acanthodii extinct Actinopterygii (ray-finned fish) Actinistia ( coelacanths) Dipnoi ( lungfish) Amphibia ( amphibians) Reptilia ( reptiles) Aves ( birds) Mammalia ( mammal development, because it reproduces very easily, passing from the egg to the larvae stage in less than three days. For genetic research groups, the Zebrafish is an excellent test subject and has already replaced rats and mice in many labs. Zebra danio is one of the few species of fish to have been flown into space (See Animals in spaceAnimals in space originally served to test the survivability of spaceflight before manned space missions were attempted. Later animals were flown to investigate various biological processes and the effects microgravity and space flight might have on them.). If researchers modify its genotype at the egg stage, they can see results on its organs barely three days later aided by the transparency of the embryos.

Because of this interest it has been one of the first organisms to have its genome sequenced. The results of genetic engineering in these fishes have been used to produce the Glofish, a glow-in-the-dark aquarium pet.

Other fish also share the name zebrafish.
