Colonel Zackquill Morgan was a son of Colonel Morgan Morgan, the first known white settler in what would become the U.S. state of West Virginia. Zackquill founded Morgantown, West Virginia which is located in Monongalia County. He was born around 1737 and court records show he died in 1802. His wife, Drusilla Springer , descended from the family that founded Wilmington, Delaware. George Washington met Morgan when he came to Morgantown during his travels. The Morgan family is known as the "First Family of West Virginia" and even one of their descendants was a Governor of West Virginia. Most notably, the great grandson of Zackquill Morgan was Francis Harrison Pierpont who was Governor of both Virginia and West Virginia and is known as "Father of West Virginia". Pierpont was a close friend of President Abraham Lincoln who appointed him as Governor of the new state of West Virginia on June 20, 1863. Morgan, Zackquill Morgan, Zackquill
