It is located in the province of Southern Finland and is part of the Tavastia Proper region. The municipality has a population of 2,677 ( 2003) and covers an area of 183.05 km² of which 0.51 km² is water. The population density is 14.7 inhabitants per km². The municipality is unilingually Finnish.
Ypäjä is situated in the countryside of south-western Finland, between the towns of Forssa (23 km from Ypäjä) and Loimaa (15 km). Although officially part of the Forssa region, it is often also considered to belong to the Loimaa region as it has traditionally been influenced by both towns.
Despite being a small village in the middle of countryside, the distances from Ypäjä to the three major cities in southern Finland are relatively short: 74 km to Turku, 96 km to Tampere, and 132 km to the capital Helsinki.
