The original brick kilns where built according to Walter Burley Griffins designs with fan forced short chimneys intended to stay below the height of the surrounding pine trees. In 1950 After World War II increased building demands in Canberra meant that a large 46 metreFor other uses of "metre" and "meter", see Metre (disambiguation). The metre is the basic unit of length in the International System of Units (SI: Systeme International d'Unites). It is defined as the length of the path travelled by light in absolute vacu natural-draft chimney was built for the new kilns. This greatly increased brick production capicity. The tall chimney is visable from many locations around central Canberra.
In recent years a report found that the tall chimney was not eathquake safe. As the chimney was heritage listed and located within falling distance of nearby homes, an engineering firm was called in to make it safe. A frame was built inside the cimney to support it without effecting it's external appearance.
The brickworks today are closed to the public but have a had various uses over the past 20 years. There have been several recent ideas that haven't eventuated, including using the site for Canberra's new gaol, making the site the new permanent home for FloriadeFloriade is a flower and entertainment festival held annually in Canberra's Commonwealth Park. The festival attracts tourists from all over Australia. Floriade is run every Spring, and is considered the most important regular event for tourism to the Aust (a yearly Canberra flower festival) or to turn the brickworks into a holiday resort. Future plans for the site are still undecided.
