Home > XXXX

XXXX (pronounced 'Four-ex') is a German style lager beer brewed in Milton, Australia by Queensland brewers, Castlemaine-Perkins, a brewery originally located in Castlemaine, a goldrush town in Victoria, Australia. Its name, first introduced in 1924, is a throwback to the long standing tradition of using X's to indicate the strength of an ale.

It contains 4.8% alcohol by volume (ABV). Described as bland but palatable (with a distinct bitter aftertaste), its frequent imbibing leads to fierce loyalty toward the subject matter. Within Australia, it is generally only available in Queensland where it competes with Victoria Bitter and Toohey's New . In other parts of the world, such as the UK, it competes with Fosters.

There is a joke that it's called XXXX because the Australians (or particularly, Queenslanders) do not know how to spell beer. (This is the politest variant on this joke.)

XXXX or FourEcks is also the name of the Australia-like continent seen in the Discworld novel The Last Continent by Terry Pratchett. This continent is largely unfinished, and the archchancellor of the local magic college is named Rincewind (no relation to the Unseen University almunus and trained coward).

XXXX is also the name of a song written by Hong Kong band LMF.

XXXX is not to be confused with XXX, a self-designation that originated in the United StatesThe United States of America also referred to as the United States U. America ¹ or the States is a federal republic in central North America, stretching from the Atlantic in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. It shares land borders with Canada in for explicit pornography (presumably on the basis that it was "beyond" the X ratingX-rated X certificate X classification or similar terms are labels for movies implying strong adult content, typically pornography or violence. The precise meaning of the "X" and whether it is an official rating or an unofficial labelling varies from coun) which is frequently found in nuisance e-mail messages and pornographic advertising.
