In the Forgotten Realms role-playing game, Wulfgar was the flag bearer for Heafstag , king of the Elk tribe when he was just a boy, In the Barbarian Ten-towns battle Bruenor knocked out Wulfgar with a blow to the head. After the battle when the people of Ten-towns were slitting throats of the barbarians not quite dead Bruenor spared Wulfgar sentencing him five years and five days of service to Bruenor in exchange for his life. Wulfgar took to the forge and changed his opinion of Bruenor from slaver to father. Bruenor crafted Aegis-fang with Wulfgar in mind. When Wulfgar's sentence was almost up Bruenor bade Drizzt to teach Wulfgar how to fight. When Akar Kessel came to conquer Ten-Towns Wulfgar defeated the white dragon Icingdeath to claim leadership of the tribes, which he turned from alliance with Akar Kessel to an alliance with Ten-towns .

More recently, Wulfgar was captured by Errtu when he and his companions were trying to reclaim Mithril Hall for Bruenor. Wulfgar was seperated by his companions and was attacked by a tanarii, which he killed. However, the tanarii dragged Wulfgar with it to Errtu, who mercilessly tortured Wulfgar. When Errtu was summoned by a bumbling apprentice, he escaped and brought Wulfgar with him. Drizzt managed to defeat Errtu and send the demon back the the Nine Hells, but Wulfgar's mind was almost broken and had attacked Catte-Brie. In an effort to stop the harm was doing, Wulfgar broke off from the Seven Companions of the Hall, as Drizzt and his companion's were called, and went to Luskan to settle a debt between him and a fat slob. Wulfgar eventually became the bouncer of Arumn's bar, but was descending into the world of the bottle. Arumn's cowardly friend, Josie, stole Wulfgar's hammer and Wulfgar was forced to find his hammer with his thief friend, Moris. Wulfgar eventually recovered his hammer with the help of his old friends, banished his demons without the help of alchohol, and has settled down with his wife, Curty, and their adopted daughter. He also now sometimes travels with the Seven Companions of the Hall.
