Built in the 18th century, it was restored by Sir Paul Getty after he acquired the estate in 1986. When Mick Jagger introduced him to cricket, he formed such an affection for the sport that in 1992 he had a replica of The Oval built on the grounds, with the Queen Mother and prime minister John Major attending the first match. Over the final decade of his life he invited teams ranging world-class sides to youth sides to come and play there in perennially celebrated matches.
