World of Sport was a British television sport anthology programme launched on ITV on January 2, 1965 in response to Grandstand. Like Grandstand, the programme ran for several hours every Saturday afternoon. Eamonn Andrews was the first host but he was replaced by Dickie Davies in 1968. The show included not only popular segments such as On The Ball , The ITV 7 and wrestling, but also in its later years, minor sports such as women's field hockey, netball and lacrosse. The programme also occasionally acquired genuinely major sporting events such as FA Cup matches.

The programme was hosted by the company holding the London weekend franchise - originally ATVAssociated Television Network Limited (ATV was a British television company formed by Lew Grade's Associated Communications Corporation and ITC Entertainment. Grade originally called the company Associated Broadcasting Company (ABC), possibly in imitation, later London Weekend TelevisionLondon Weekend Television Limited (LWT is the ITV contractor for London, Friday 5:15pm to Monday, 5:59am. The company took over from ATV Network Limited in 1968 (ATV continued broadcasting to the Midlands until 1981). ATV's weekend franchise had covered S - under the ITV Sport banner, with the other ITV stations supplying footage of events in their regions.

The programme's title is similar to Wide World of SportsABC's Wide World of Sports is a long-running sports anthology show on American television. As the title suggests, it aired on the ABC television network. The show debuted April 29, 1961, and was the creation of Roone Arledge, the executive producer of ABC, but it is not clear if the AmericanThe United States of America also referred to as the United States U. America ¹ or the States is a federal republic in central North America, stretching from the Atlantic in the east to the Pacific Ocean in the west. It shares land borders with Canada in show inspired the title.
