Home > World Heavyweight Championship

The top title of the RAW brand of World Wrestling Entertainment, its lineage can be traced back to the original NWA World Heavyweight Championship, though it distinctively broke from that lineage in 1991 with then champion Ric Flair becoming the WCW World Heavyweight Championship. Now it is known simply as the World Heavyweight Championship without any promotional abbreviation preceding it. Triple H is the current World Heavyweight Champion.

1 History and Trivia

It has been defended in the NWA, WCW and WWE, with no other major title being able to make that claim. The only other World title of that stature to appear in as many promotions is the ECW World Heavyweight Championship, and while defended in ECW it was only recognized in WCW (champion Mike Awesome attacked Kevin Nash) and WWE (champion Tazz faced WWF Champion Triple H) without defenses.

2 Naming Lineage

3 Current Champion

The current champion is Triple H in his 5th of this championship, with the counting his simultaneous winning of it and the WWF Championship in 2002 before they were combined as his first, and his 10th reign as a recognized World Champion having already won the WWE Championship 5 times as well. He began his ninth title reign on September 12, 2004 by beating former Evolution member Randy Orton with the help of current Evolution members Ric Flair and Batista.

This number is controversial as the WWE themselves claim Triple H is only a 9 time total champion, yet when Triple H defeated the Chris Jericho to win the WWF Undisputed Championship, he won both the WWF Championship and the World Championship, and was the title holder when the two belts were consolidated into one distinct title. Since then he was awarded the belt once and won it a further 3 more times, from Shawn Michaels, Goldberg and now Randy Orton.
