In 1986, WCCW broke away from the NWA.
Talent exchanges, and talent deals, turned WCCW into one of the most recognized wrestling promotions in America by the mid '80s.
However, with WWF encroaching on many traditional territories, WCCW was forced into an inter-promotional attempt at going national itself. It attempted this by joining Pro Wrestling USA mk. 2 with the AWA and CWA . The hope was that inter-federational matches and revenue from SuperClash III would be enough to keep WCCW afloat.
However, this didn't eventuate, and Adkisson was forced to sell WCCW to CWA owner Jerry Jarrett . The combined federation became known as the USWA.
