Woodruff County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 8,741. The county seat is Augusta.
Woodruff County was formed on 26 November 1862 and was named for William E. Woodruff , founder of the state's first newspaper, the Arkansas Gazette.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,539 km˛ (594 mi˛). 1,519 km˛ (587 mi˛) of it is land and 19 km˛ (7 mi˛) of it is water. The total area is 1.26% water.
As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 8,741 people, 3,531 households, and 2,439 families residing in the county. The population density is 6/km˛ (15/mi˛). There are 4,089 housing units at an average density of 3/km˛ (7/mi˛). The racial makeup of the county is 67.86% White, 30.75% Black or African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 0.81% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,531 households out of which 30.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.60% are married couples living together, 16.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.90% are non-families. 28.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
