Woodburn is a city located in Marion County, Oregon. Lewis McArthur records a verbal tradition told to him by Charles E. Nebergall that Woodburn was named in the 1880s, after the railroad line had been laid thourgh the area, for a slash burn that got out of control and burned down a nearby woodlot. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 20,100.

1 Geography

Woodburn is located at 45°8'50" North, 122°51'30" West (45.147258, -122.858436) 1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 13.5 km˛ (5.2 mi˛). 13.5 km˛ (5.2 mi˛) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

2 Demographics

As of the census 2 of 2000, there are 20,100 people, 6,274 households, and 4,492 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,492.4/km˛ (3,865.8/mi˛). There are 6,824 housing units at an average density of 506.7/km˛ (1,312.5/mi˛). The racial makeup of the city is 58.12% White, 0.45% African American, 1.17% Native American, 0.53% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 35.66% from other races, and 4.00% from two or more races. 50.07% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Woodburn is also home for a sizeable community of Russian Orthodox Old BelieversThe Old Believers or are a schismatic group of the Russian Orthodox Church. The schism itself is known as staroobryadchestvo . In 1652, Patriarch Nikon of the Russian Orthodox Church introduced a number of reforms aimed at centralizing his power and bring, who form between a quarter and a third of the population.

There are 6,274 households out of which 34.6% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.1% are married couplesMarriage is a relationship that plays a key role in the definition of many families.
