The regional municipality of Wood Buffalo is located in the northeastern corner of Alberta. Created in 1995 as an amalgamation of the City of Fort McMurray and Improvement District 143, it now ranks, by area, among the largest municipalities in North America. Underlying its 68,454 kmē of wilderness lies vast oil sands deposits, also known as the Athabasca Tar Sands, helping to make the region one of the fastest growing industrial areas in Canada.

Until the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution of 2004, the municipality was divided between the provincial electoral districts of Fort McMurray (the town itself) and AthabascaThe town of Athabasca is located in rural Alberta, Canada. As a result, the new Wood Buffalo electoral districtWood Buffalo is an Albertan provincial electoral district, located in the northeastern corner of the province. The district was created in the Alberta electoral boundary re-distribution of 2004 to encompass the entire regional municipality of Wood Buffalo became the most populous such district in Alberta.
