Woking is a large town in EnglandEngland is the largest, the most populous, and the most densely populated of the four " Home Nations" which make up the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland (UK). Occupying the south-eastern portion of the island of Great Britain, England, in the west of Surrey. It is about 30 minutes by train from LondonLondon is the capital of the United Kingdom and of England, and with over seven million inhabitants in the Greater London area, is the second-most populous conurbation in Europe (after Moscow). From being Londinium the capital of the Roman province of Bri. Woking was formed around the station built there over 150 years ago to act as a junction between trains to the south coast and the necropolis railway to Brookwood cemetery. Later, Woking was home to the first crematorium in the United Kingdom (St Johns) and the first mosqueMezquita (mosque) in Cordoba, Spain. A mosque is a place of worship for followers of the Islamic faith. Masjid is the Arabic term for a mosque. This term is used widely throughout the Islamic world, and the word masjid is widely preferred by many Muslims. in the UK (on Oriental Road). It was also the location for Brookwood CemeteryBrookwood Cemetery (aka the London Necropolis) was set up by the London Necropolis Company in 1852 to house London's dead, since the capital was finding it difficult to locate the increasing population, both of living and dead. By 1854, it was the largest, which was developed by the London Necropolis CompanyThe London Necropolis Company also London Necropolis & National Mausoleum Company was set up in 1850, and established by Act of Parliament in 1852. Its purpose was to create a large metropolitan cemetery, big enough to hold all of London's dead forever. as an overflow burial ground for London's dead.

Woking is famous for its football club Woking F.C.. Michael Hale is a particularly famous football player from the town.

It was also home to H.G. Wells, who had the Martians in The War of the Worlds land in the town, and to Dame Ethel Smythe .

The Basingstoke Canal passes through Woking.

There is a statue of a (Wellsian) Martian in the town.
