Wish You Were Here is an album by Pink Floyd, released on September 15, 1975 (see 1975 in music). The album is about absence and had two tracks("Welcome to the Machine" and "Have a Cigar") about the negative aspects of the record business. The album was more melancholic than most of their previous records, although there are notes of optimism and joy throughout. The title track "Wish You Were Here" is said to be as much about the thoughts they have that they are falling apart as a band, as a tribute to Syd. The suite "Shine on You Crazy Diamond" is divided into nine parts and is a homage to former bandmember Syd Barrett, whose mental illness made it impossible for him to continue as a useful member. The piece begins and closes the album (parts one through five open it, parts six through nine are the final track). Originally released on Columbia Records in the US then re-released as a Digitally Remastered CD in 1994 in the UK on EMI. Then Columbia issued the remastered CD in 1997 in the US and rest of the world. Then Wish You Were Here was re-released in 2000 on Capitol Records in the US and EMI for the rest of the world outside the US for its 25th Anniversary.
Wish You Were Here peaked at #1 on Billboard's USA Pop Albums chart and has sold over six million copies to date in the US and was certified Gold on September 17, 1975 in the US and as Sextuple Platinum in the US on May 16, 1997 by the R.I.A.A. and has sold altogether worldwide 13 million copies.
