Williamson is a town located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 6,777.

The Town of Williamson is in the northwest part of the county.

1 History

The first settler, Daniel Russell, built a log cabin in Pultneyville in 1794. This hamlet became the only port until the opening of the Erie Canal. Williamson was created in 1802 from the Town of Sodus. In 1814 during the War of 1812, British troops landed and an agreement was made with the villagers allowing them to seize some stores without resistance, but a dispute broke out and firing began on both sides.

2 Geography

The north town border is Lake Ontario.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 89.7 km² (34.7 mi²). 89.7 km² (34.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.06% water.

The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.08.

In the town the population is spread out with 27.5% under the age of 18, 6.1% from 18 to 24, 28.6% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.5% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.7 males.

The median income for a household in the town is $51,068, and the median income for a family is $56,757. Males have a median income of $39,250 versus $31,250 for females. The per capita income for the town is $20,701. 4.7% of the population and 2.7% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.5% of those under the age of 18 and 7.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
