This statue in Aberdeen commemorates William Wallace.
Popular opinion often sees Wallace as 'one of the common people', in contrast to his fellow-countryman, Robert de Bruce ( Robert I of Scotland), who came from noble stock. Wallace's family descended from Richard Wallace (Richard the Welshman), a landowner under an early member of the Stewart family (which would later become a royal line in its own right). Wallace was born at Ellerslie in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire around 1270, which made him still a young man in his most famous years between 1297 and 1305. Some confusion exists over the birthplace of Wallace. Later documents tie Wallace to RenfrewshireRenfrewshire is one of 32 unitary authority regions in Scotland. It borders onto North Ayrshire, East Renfrewshire, City of Glasgow, Inverclyde and West Dunbartonshire. The 1975-96 district of Renfrew covered a slightly larger area, and included the towns, possibly by conflating the name Ellerslie with that of ElderslieThe small town or village of Elderslie in Renfrewshire, Scotland, midway between Paisley and Johnstone, achieved fame as the birthplace of Scottish freedom fighter, William Wallace. The name sometimes appears spelt "Ellerslie". Towns in Scotland. (which lies in Renfrewshire). Such substitutions occur commonly in old documents, as spelling did not become standardised until more recent times. Contemporary sources suggest Wallace hailed from Ayrshire. His father came from RiccartonThe place-name of Riccarton may refer to: a parish in Ayrshire, Scotland a locality to the south-west of Edinburgh, Scotland a locality on the Taieri Plains in Otago, New Zealand Riccarton a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand., Ayrshire and his mother from LoudounLoudoun is an area of Scotland, near Kilmarnock. See also Loudoun County, Virginia., Ayrshire. On top of this, Wallace's earliest battles took place in Ayrshire.
Few contemporary sources for information about Wallace's early life exist, and historians largely rely on the account of Blind HarryBlind Harry Harry or Henry the Minstrel circa. 1440 1492 Blind Harry is renowned as the earliest surviving source for the events of the life of William Wallace, the Scottish patriot and freedom-fighter, and hero of the film Braveheart. It seems certain that he was born in Ayrshire, the son of Sir Malcolm Wallace of Riccarton, and that he had two brothers: Malcolm and John.
Wallace received his education from two uncles who had become priests, and therefore he became well-educated by the standards of the time, knowing both FrenchFrench le francais la langue francaise is one of the most important Romance languages, outnumbered only by Spanish and Portuguese.
