Born Pennsylvania, McKean was the grandson of Thomas McKean, the governor of that state.
McKean was appointed midshipman 30 November 1814; served in the Navy from the War of 1812 to the Civil War; rose to the rank of flag officer in command of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron ; relieved from active duty 4 June 1862.
McKean died at Binghamton, New YorkBinghamton is a city in upstate New York in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 47,380. It is the county seat of Broome County. It is nestled in the Southern Tier of New York, at the confluence of the Susquehanna a, 22 April 1865.
Two ships were named in his honor.
