Home > William Lane


William Lane (1861-1917) was a pioneer of the Australian Labor movement. He was born in Bristol, England, and died in Auckland, New Zealand. In 1885 he migrated to Australia and worked in Brisbane as a journalist, eventually becoming editor of "The Worker". Following the defeat of the Shearer's strike in the 1890s he worked to establish the "New Australia" communist utopian settlements in Paraguay in 1893.
