Home > William Henry, Duke of Gloucester

Prince William Henry, Duke of Gloucester and Edinburgh, Earl of Connaught ( November 14, 1743 - August 25, 1805) was the fifth child of Frederick, Prince of Wales and Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and a younger brother of King George III.

He was most known for his secret marriage to Maria, Dowager Countess Waldegrave, an illegitimate granddaughter of Sir Robert Walpole. This marriage and that of his brother prompted the passing of the Royal Marriages Act. The Duke of Gloucester had two children by his wife - William, 2nd Duke of Gloucester (who married his first cousin Mary, a daughter of George III, but had no issue) and a daughter who died unmarried. He also had an illegitimate daughter Louisa Maria Carpenter alias Louisa Maria La Coast, who has left several descendants.
