He was born in Buffalo, New York, and studied art history at Harvard and music at Yale. His teachers included Ralph Kirkpatrick and Kenneth Gilbert . He moved to France in 1971, and became known for his interpretations of Baroque music, particularly French Baroque music. In 1979 he founded Les Arts Florissants , an ensemble devoted to Baroque music. He has also taught at the Paris Conservatoire.
