Home > William Byrd I

William Byrd I (1652-1704), was the father of William Byrd II.

William Byrd I (1652-1704), came from England in the late 1660s, and became a well-connected fur trader in the Richmond, Virginia area. Some of the land he owned, he gave to fleeing French huguenot refugees in Manakin town. Byrd's land also became (after his death) the site of modern day Richmond, Virginia.

In 1676, Byrd fought alongside Nathanial Bacon in a Bacon's Rebellion. Byrd later allied himself with the local British Governer and became a prominent citizen.

Also in 1676, Byrd established the James River Fort on the south bank of the James River in what is now known as the Manchester District of Richmond.
