Wilhelm Müller ( October 7, 1794 - September 30, 1827), German lyric poet, was born at Dessau, the son of a shoemaker.

He was educated at the gymnasium of his native town and at the university of Berlin, where he devoted himself to philological and historical studies. In 1813- 1814 he took part, as a volunteer, in the national rising against Napoleon. In 1817 he visited Italy, and in 1820 published his impressions in Rom, Romer und Romerinnen. Müller's earliest lyrics are contained in a volume of poems, Bundesbluten, by several friends, which was published in 1816. 1 Müller and Schubert

Müller is not considered a major figure of German literature, and his work would probably be known only to specialists today, were it not that the celebrated composer Franz SchubertFranz Peter Schubert ( January 31, 1797 November 19, 1828), was an Austrian composer. He wrote some six hundred romantic songs as well as operas, symphonies, sonatas and many other works. Public appreciation of his work during his lifetime was limited; he discovered his poems and set them to music. In particular, Schubert's two great song cycleA song cycle is a group of songs designed to be performed in sequence as a single entity. Usually all of the songs are by the same composer and use words from the same poet. A song cycle is unified by reference to a particular theme or by telling a story.s, Die schöne MüllerinDie schone Mullerin D. 795, is a song cycle by Franz Schubert on poems by Wilhelm Muller. It is the earliest song cycle to be widely performed. Muller's poems were published in 1820, and Schubert set most of them to music between May and September of 1823 and WinterreiseWinterreise Winter Journey is a song cycle by Franz Schubert, on poems by Wilhelm Muller. The cycle was written in 1827 and includes 24 songs on the subject of unrequited love: #Gute Nacht #Die Wetterfahne #Gefrorne Tanen #Erstarrung #Der Lindenbaum #Wass, are both based on collections by Müller. Although the poetry in these works is hardly of the highest order, many feel there was something in Müller's writing that spurred Schubert to his highest level of inspiration, and that much of the success of these works should indeed be attributed to Müller.
