Who's That Girl is a rough adaptation of the 1938 Howard Hawkes film Bringing Up Baby. Both films feature a strait-laced character who is betrothed to a woman who he does not love, a wild woman who distracts him from his wedding preparations, and a large feline who becomes an important plot point.
Griffin Dunne plays Louden Trott, a lawyer who is supposed to marry a the daughter of the boss of the law firm he works for. Madonna is Nikki Finn, a recently paroled criminal. While getting Nikki to the bus station is one of his many tasks for the day, Nikki has ideas of her own - she wants to prove her innocence. She takes him on a wild chase all over New York City, which eventually leads to a predictable ending. The film also features a rare jungle cat, which is obviously a nod to Hawkes' work.
Although slightly successful among teenage audiences, the movie flopped at the ticket counters. Its soundtrack, Who's That Girl, was much more successful, spawning a number one hit in the song also named " Who's That Girl". The movie was released on home video format on November 11 of 1987. Madonna's world tour named Who's that Girl was a succes in 18 cities across North America, Europe, and Asia.
