The village was built in the late 1990s to help alleviate housing problems across the South-East of England. It is situated just off Junction 9 of the M27 motorway. Apart from the village's residential areas, which house around 6,000 residents, the main focus is the Whitely Village Outlet Centre . This pedestrianised shopping centre consists of a number of discount stores, particularly designer fashions.
Whiteley also contains the Solent Business Park which consists of a number of large offices, including Zurich and Lloyds TSB. The most recent and high profile addition to the park is the new headquarters for National Air Traffic Services. Meridian Broadcasting plans to move to premises within Whiteley in late 2004.
