Werner Hans Erhard (born John Paul Rosenberg on September 5, 1935 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania) founded the large group awareness training program est, short for Erhard Seminars Training.

Rosenberg sold used cars in his early twenties. He later sold encyclopedias. He married and had four children. He first changed his the name in 1960 when he moved to California with his lover, June Bryde. He was accused of bigamy.

Erhard commercialized what he called human potential transformation in the early 1970s, establishing est in San Francisco. The est organization later became Werner Erhard and Associates, or WEA.

In the 1970s Erhard maintained financial links with Jack Sarfatti and the Physics/Consciousness Research Group. He also attempted to foster links with Michael Murphy and the Esalen Institute, and allegedly contributed funds to the SRI remote viewingRemote viewing (RV is a technique developed by parapsychologists in an attempt to develop a more "scientific" form of applied clairvoyance by which a viewer is said to use his or her clairvoyant abilities to "view", i. gather information on a target consi project.

The new owners former staff of WEA further develo.
