Home > Welsh Highland Railway

The Welsh Highland Railway is a narrow gauge railway in Wales. It was opened in 1923 as an amalgamation of the North Wales Narrow Gauge Railway and the Portmadoc, Beddgelert & South Snowdon Railway and runs through the highlands of Snowdonia, touching the foot of Snowdon and the village of Beddgelert.

The whole line ran from Dinas near Caernarfon to Porthmadog with a branch line to the slate mines at Bryngwyn. The Welsh Highland Railway was no commercial success and went into receivership already in 1927, service continued operated by the Ffestiniog Railway Company until 1933. After only ten years of operation the longest narrow gauge railway in Wales was closed for service, the tracks lifted during scrap collections in World War II.

First attempts to rebuild the line in view of a growing tourist market in Snowdonia date back to 1964. These attempts led to the formation of the society now known as the Welsh Highland Railway (Porthmadog) with a short stretch of line operational in Porthmadog. 30 years later another attempt to reopen the whole line was successfully made by today's Ffestiniog Railway Company. Their Welsh Highland Railway (Caernarfon) opened the first stretch of line on the abandoned standard gauge trackbed between Caernarfon and Dinas in 19971997 was a common year starting on Wednesday (see link for calendar), and was designated the International Year of the Reef''.
