Home > Walkie talkie

Walkie Talkie is common slang for a handheld two-way radio. Walkie-Talkies, also known as handheld radios, or by an old Motorola brand-name, Handi-Talki (common amongst ham radio operators, especially when shortened to "HT"), are self-contained radio transceivers, capable of receiving and transmitting radio waves. They include their own power source (a battery), along with a built-in (sometimes removable) antenna, as well as a speaker and/or a jack for headphones.

Walkie Talkies are used for a wide range of purposes, including the Family Radio Service (such as Motorola's TalkAbout radios), business band communications, ham radio, as well as public safety communications, such as used by police, fire, and ambulance services. Walkie talkies are also available for Citizens' Band radio services, although most are somewhat bulky due to the low-frequency (27 MHz) at which they operate. Low-cost 'toy' radios commonly operate in the 49 MHz band.
