It was won by Brazil, who beat Sweden 5-2 in the final for their first title. The World Cup marked the debut on the world stage of 17-year-old Pele, who would grow to be con, when they drew all the matches in their group and reached the Quarter-finals, losing 1-0 to Brazil. Up until recently, they were managed by former player Mark Hughes, but he left to concentrate on his new job as manager of English Premiership side Blackburn Rovers.

John Toshack was appointed manager for the second time on the 12th November 2004, ten years after he had resigned from the position after one game in charge.
