Wales ( Welsh: Cymru; pronounced /"k@mrI/ SAMPA, ˌkəmɽɪ IPA, 'Kumree' approximate pronunciation) is one of the four nations comprising the United Kingdom (the other three being England, Scotland and Northern Ireland). The term Principality of Wales, Welsh: Tywysogaeth Cymru, is often used, although the Prince of Wales has no role in the governance of Wales. The nation has had no real independence since 1282, when it was taken by the English King. It has no significant national government (see the National Assembly for Wales), does not issue its own currency and is not in control of any armed forces. These are the powers of the national government of the UK, based at Westminster. The capital of Wales is Cardiff, although the smaller, historic town of Caernarfon, in north Wales, is the location of the vestiture of the Prince of Wales.
