WWHO began operating in the late 1980s. Previously, the station used the call letters WWAT. The station operated as an independent station for a number of years until the launch of the WB television network. WWHO remained a WB affiliate until being purchased by Paramount, at which time the station took on UPN programming as a secondary UPN affiliate. Not long after, WWHO became primarily a UPN affiliate and shifted WB programming to nights and weekends.
The station currently broadcasts in stereo. WWHO-DT (WWHO's digital station) operates on channel 46.
