WPMI is the NBC affiliate for Mobile, Alabama. It first started serving the Mobile area in 1981 as the area's first independent station. In 1987, the station dropped its independent status and became a FOX affiliate.
WPMI was the first television station purchased by Clear Channel Communications, in 1988.
In 1997, the FOX and NBC affiliates switched stations: WALA became a FOX station, and WPMI became an NBC station.
The evening newscasts are helmed by Peter Albrecht and Drexel Gilbert . The late-night and weekend newscasts are hosted by Mike Rush and Kelly Foster .
