Since 1997 the WNBA has administrated a yearly draft of college and professional women's basketball players.

The 1997 WNBA draft, the league's first, was comprised mostly of professional women's basketball players who had played internationally. Subsequent drafts were conducted on talent pools primarily comprised of college players.
