Windows Media Audio (WMA) is a proprietary compressed audio file format used by Microsoft. It was initially a competitor to the MP3 format, but with the introduction of Apple's iTunes Music Store, it has positioned itself as a competitor to the advanced audio coding format used by Apple. It is part of the Windows Media framework. An initial reason for the development of WMA might have been that MP3 technology is patented and has to be licensed from Thomson for inclusion in the Microsoft Windows operating system.

A WMA file is almost always encapsulated in an Advanced Systems Format (ASF) file. The resulting file may have the filename suffix "wma" or "asf" with the "wma" suffix being used only if the file is strictly audio. The ASF file format specifies how metadata about the file is to be encoded, akin to the ID3 tags used by MP3 files, it is also patented in the United States.

Files in this format can be played using Windows Media PlayerWindows Media Player is a software media player used for playing audio and video on personal computers. Produced by Microsoft, it is available free of charge for Microsoft Windows. Microsoft also makes free versions for other operating systems including P, WinampWinamp is a skinnable, multi-format music/ media player made by Nullsoft that currently can be used only on the Windows operating system; it is available for free, although a "Pro" version with additional features is available for a small payment to cover and many other alternative media players. The FFmpegFFmpeg is a set of open source computer programs that can record, convert and stream digital audio and video. It includes libavcodec, a leading audio/video codec library. FFmpeg is developed under Linux, but it can compile under most operating systems, in project have reverse-engineered and reimplemented the WMA format to allow its use on POSIX compliant operating systems such as LinuxThis article is about Linux-based operating systems, GNU/Linux, and related topics. Windows Media Audio supports digital rights managementDigital Rights Management or Digital Restrictions Management DRM is an umbrella term for any of several arrangements which allows a vendor of content in electronic form to control the material and restrict its usage in various ways that can be specified b using a combination of elliptic curve cryptographyElliptic curve cryptography (ECC is an approach to public-key cryptography based on the mathematics of elliptic curves. Proponents claim that ECC can be faster and use smaller keys than older methods — such as RSA — while providing an equivalent level of key exchange, DESThis article is about the DES encryption algorithm. For other uses, see DES (disambiguation). The Data Encryption Standard DES is a cipher (a method for encrypting information) selected as an official Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) for the block cipher, a custom block cipher, RC4 stream cipher and the SHA-1 hashing function.

With the advent of Windows Media Audio 9, the codec was updated to WMA Pro and a new lossless codec has been introduced to accompany the existing lossy codec. Support for variable bit rates has also been introduced. WMA Pro has not been reverse engineered yet.
