WIAT TV, "CBS42" is the CBS affiliate of Birmingham. WIAT is an UHF television station licensed to Birmingham. "CBS42" origianlly began in 1965 as a local venture by Bill DuBois. The station was affiliated with CBS from its beginning, but with different call letters, W BirMinGham. I was a well-known local television station not because of its affiliation, but its local shows. Parker Broadcasting, who were the station's owners since 1970, sold it in January 1997 due to the fact the newscast ratings were low. Media General began the station's new owners with a news general manager Eric Land. When the station didn't produce ratings that satisfy Land, he then cancelled the station's newscast and fired the entire news team on Janurary 1, 1998. The station over the next 3 months went through a serious overhaul from graphics, set, to logo. The station's call letters were changed from WBMG to WIAT, which stands for W It's About Time, the station's slogan. The newscast was debuted on March 1998, with a new name "42 Daily News" company to the old newscast name "CBS42 News". Ratings somewhat improve, but many problems behind the scenes have occurred over the last few years involving on-air talent (what little 42 has) and management that led to lawsuits. But surprisingly in 1998, the station received its first 2 Emmy awards in the station's history. The station recently, updated its graphics, set, and newscast title to "News42, Its About Time".
