Windows Glyph List version 4.0, also known as PanEuropean character set, is subset of Unicode used in Microsoft Windows operating system. It has 652 characters, that are available in all computers using Unicode aware Windows (NT4 or newer).

1 Why is this subset important?

Unicode includes currenty over 96,000 character, it's not feasible to include all those in fonts, or ship font including all characters with operating system. WGL-4 is guaranteed to exist in all Microsoft Windows platforms since 1998. It includes Microsoft's codepages 1250, 1251, 1252, 1253 and 1254, supporting Western, Eastern European, Cyrillic, Greek and Turkish.

Many unicode fonts include at least WGL4 characters. Other subset ot Unicode include MES-1 and MES-2 (CEN Multilingual European Character Set)
