WBRC TV, channel 6, FOX6 is the Fox Broadcasting Company affiliate of Birmingham. WBRC began operation on July 4, 1949 on channel 4 as NBC affiliate, but moved to channel 6 in 1953 and changed to a CBS affiliate in 1954. WBRC then became an ABC affiliate in 1967. The definition of the stations call letters are W Bell Radio Company. In early 1996, News Corporation(Newscorp), owners of Fox, purchased New World Communications and all its stations including WBRC. The reasoning behind the purchase was because wanted Fox to affiliate stations in markets that have high-rated news operations like WBRC. This affiliation switch led to the "Big Switch" of '96, in which WTTO lost their affiliation of Fox and forced the ABC affiliation of Birmingham to move to the station combo of WBMA/WCFT/WJSU. "FOX6" has gained the repetition of having one of the nation's highest rated primetime newscasts named "FOX6 News at 9:00". It also known operating the most hours of news programming per week in the market (43 hours).
