The Vz 58 (Samopal vzor 58 in full) is a Czech assault rifle also known as Sa vz 58 or sometimes (incorrectly) CZ 58. Although it looks externally very similar to the AK-47 has a completely different internal operation. The Vz 58 is designed for the destruction of lightly armored mobile enemy equipment and manpower. It is gas-operated and capable of firing in single shots or in bursts. Ninety-three countries across the globe have adopted this assault rifle.
The Vz 58 is based on a rifle designed by Emanuel Holek to compete in trials held by the Czech government for a Kalashnikov type rifle in 1953. It was adapted for the M43 (7.62x39 Soviet) cartridge by Josef Cermak and entered production in 1958.
