Vvardenfell is part of a large province in the fictional world of the computer game, Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind.1 Regions of Vvardenfell
Vvardenfell is divided into nine distinct regions, each with their own plant and animal life:
- Ascadian Isles - Fertile, green lowlands on the southwestern corner of Vvardenfell. Most of Vvardenfell's agriculture is here, as are the cities of Vivec and Ebonheart, as well as the daedric ruins of Ald Sotha.
- Ashlands - Dry and inhospitable, the Ashlands are the areas surrounding the Red Mountain region. Various Dunmer tribes inhabit the region, and the Redoran seat of Ald'ruhn is near the western edge.
- Azura's Coast - A rugged and mostly uninhabited stretch of coast and islands, running along a significant portion of the island. A variety of plants exist there, as well as the Telvanni seat of Sadrith Mora, the wizard towers at Tel Mora, Tel Aruhn, and Tel Branora, and the village of Molag Mar. Also, there are the ruins of Bal Fell, and the Shrine of Azura.
- Bitter Coast - The humid western coast of Vvardenfell, so named because of the common salt marshes and swamps of the area. Also known as the Smuggler's Coast, because of the large number of caves used by smugglers. Seyda Neen, Hla Oad, and Gnaar Mok are the only settlements in the region.
- Grazelands - Comprising the majority of the northwestern coast of the island, the Grazelands, so named because of the Ashlander herds that graze there, is largely uninhabited, except for the settlement in Vos village, as well as the wizard towers of Tel Vos and Tel Fyr. The Zainab tribe also has a permanant settlement there.
- Molag Amur - Between the Ashlands and Azura's Coast is Molag Amur, a desolate expanse of lava flows, ravines, and fields of ash. Travel is difficult, and ashstorms frequently strike the area. Parts are considered impassable, even by the native Dunmer tribes. The stronghold of Molag Mar, the Erabenimsun tribe camp, and the pilgrimage sites at Mount Assarnibibi and Mount Kand are the only inhabited sites.
- Red Mountain - The defining feature of Vvardenfell, Red Mountain is a giant volcano, steep and rugged, from which ash storms continually issue. Surrounding the mountain is the magical Ghostfence, which fences in the many monsters of the region, and filters out the disease-laden "blight" which issues from the crater. The only entrance is at the fortified outpost of Ghostfence, in which pilgrims, as well as the Order of the Buoyant Armigers, reside. Numerous dwemer ruins dot its slopes, and Dagoth Ur resides inside a facility deep inside the mountain, but there are no inhabitations, and adventurers rarely venture past the Ghostgate.
- West Gash - The western highlands of Vvardenfell are called the West Gash, stretching from the Sea of Ghosts to the city of Balmora. Vegetation is sparse, but hardy. The Hlaalu district seat of Balmora is here, as is the Imperial town of Caldera, the mining village of Gnisis, and the fishing villages of Ald Velothi and Khuul.
- Sheogorad - The large island of Sheogorad is the northern tip of Vvardenfell, and due to its rugged terrain and many hostile creatures, it is largely uninhabited, except for the small villages of Dagon Fel and Ald Redaynia. Numerous ruins dot the landscape, and there are several shrines in the area.
2 Politics of Vvardenfell
Vvardenfell politics is a dance between the three Houses of Hlaalu, Telvanni, and Redoran, as well as the Temple, both Imperial and Dunmer, and the Empire itself. The houses maintain the air of peace, and although hostility is not open with them, constant incursions, especially by 'rogue Telvanni' keep tensions high. Adding to this, there is the dominant influence of the Tribunal, or Dunmer temple, which controls much of Vvardenfell, and the twin influences of the Empire, and the Imperial Temple, which wish to keep stability in the area, to preserve the empire.
3 Major towns of Vvardenfell
- Vivec - The largest city, made up of 8 huge individual buildings, referred to as cantons. Among the cantons are cantons for each of the Great Houses of Morrowind (Hlaalu, Telvanni, Redoran), as well as the High Fane of the Temple, the Palace of the god Vivec, and the Ministry of Truth, a large hollow moonlet suspended over the High Fane.
- Ebonheart - Seat of imperial rule over Vvardenfell, Ebonheart is the regional headquarters of the East Empire Company, and home of Castle Ebonheart, wherein Duke Vedam Dren resides.
- Balmora - The largest city on Vvardenfell after Vivec, Balmora is the district seat for House Hlaalu, and center of trade in the nearby regions.
- Ald'ruhn - One of the largest cities on the island of Vvardenfell, and district seat for House Redoran. House Redoran is located under the remains of the shell of an extinct giant crab.
- Sadrith Mora - District seat of House Telvanni, and home of the Telvanni council. Notable for its organic architecture, the buildings likened to mushrooms and roots. Non-Telvanni are confined to the Gateway Hotel.
