The Voyager 1 spacecraft is an unmanned probe of the outer solar system. It is the most distant man-made object, still moving further away, and expected to keep on transmitting into the 2020s.

It was originally planned as Mariner 11 of the Mariner program. It was launched on September 5, 1977 by NASA from Cape Canaveral aboard a Titan- Centaur rocket, slightly after its sister craft, Voyager 2 (the two Voyager program spacecraft are identical).

It has followed a trajectory along Jupiter and Saturn.

1 Jupiter and Saturn

Voyager 1 began photographing Jupiter in January 1979. Its closest approach to Jupiter was on March 5March 5 is the 64th day of the year in the Gregorian Calendar (65th in leap years). There are 301 days remaining. The two Voyager spacecraft made a number of important discoveries about Jupiter and its satellites. The most surprising was the existence of sulfurSulfur (or sulphur see spelling) is the chemical element in the periodic table that has the symbol S and atomic number 16. An abundant tasteless odorless multivalent non-metal, sulfur is best known as yellow crystals and occurs in many sulfide and sulfate volcanoThis article is about volcanoes geology. For the action movie see: Volcano (movie). A volcano (plural, volcanoes) is a geological landform (usually a mountain) where magma (rock of the earth's interior made molten or liquid by high pressure and temperatures on IoIo is the innermost of the four Galilean moons of Jupiter. It is named after the Greek mythological figure Io, one of the many lovers of Zeus (who is also known as Jupiter in the Roman mythology). Although the name "Io" was suggested by Simon Marius soon, which had not been observed from the ground or by Pioneer 10Launched on March 2, 1972, Pioneer 10 (also called Pioneer F) was the first spacecraft to travel through the asteroid belt, the first spacecraft to make direct observations of Jupiter, and on June 13th 1983 it became the first man-made object to leave the or 11.

The spacecraft went on to visit Saturn. Voyager 1's Saturn flyby occurred in November 1980, with the closest approach on November 12 when it came within 124,000 kilometers (77,000 miles) of the planet's cloud-tops. The craft detected complex structures in Saturn's rings, and studied the atmospheres of Saturn and Titan. Its trajectory, designed to allow close study of Titan, took it out of the plane of the ecliptic, thus ending its planetary science mission.
