Home > Vocal sack

The vocal sack is the flexible throat possessed by most but not all males of the order anura ( frogs and toads). It is inflated to produce their distinctive calls.

The presence or development of the vocal sack is one way of externally determining the sex in many species.

Species lacking the vocal sack include the Fire-Bellied Toad Bombina orientalis , which has a very weak call as a result.
