The title of Earl of Halifax has been created several times in British history. The first creation, in the Peerage of England in 1679, was for George Savile, 1st Viscount Halifax, who was later made Marquess of Halifax. This creation became extinct in 1700. The title was recreated in the Peerage of Great Britain in 1714 for Charles Montagu, 1st Baron Halifax, First Lord of the Treasury to George I. When he died a year later, the title was recreated in 1715 for his nephew, this version becoming extinct in 1771.
