Violent Cases was the first graphic novel written by Neil Gaiman, and also the first of his many collaborations with artist Dave McKean. Originally published in black and white by Titan Books in 1987, the art was colorized in later editions.

The story, narrated by Gaiman in an autobiographical fashion, is an imperfectly remembered tale from an early childhood in Portsmouth in which the protagonist is taken by his father to be treated by an osteopath who was once employed by Al Capone. The boy has several encounters with the osteopath, and his thoughts on the older man's enthralling tales of gangsters form the bulk of the narrative.

As with many of Gaiman's other works (Most notably The Sandman) Violent Cases is a story about stories, and its themes of early childhood perception and the nature of memory are visited again in 1994's Mr. Punch (Also with Dave McKean).
