Vincent Ward (born in Greytown, New Zealand in 1956) is a film director and screenwriter. He trained as an artist and made a number of noted short films before his first 'art-house' film Vigil appeared at the Cannes Film Festival. His next film, The Navigator , took four years to make and won six AFI awards. After the romantic drama Map of the Human Heart he made an abortive attempt to direct and script Alien³, but the film's backers dismissed his central concept of monks aboard a giant wooden ark in space and he left the project. Despite this his next feature moved away from the lower budget of his earlier works: the Hollywood-based $90m What Dreams May Come appeared in 1998.
