The University of Yangôn is located in the capital city of Myanmar, Yangon. The university itself is located in the north of the city, near the Inya Lake. It is located on the corner of Pyay Road and University Avenue Road. Yangon University is in Kamayut Township.
Formerly known as the Rangoon University during British occupation, Yangon University has been named several times. During Ne Win's rule, the school's name was Rangoon Arts and Sciences University. However, the name changed when the new Burmese military regime officially renamed Rangoon and Burma as Yangon and Myanmar. Due to this change, Rangoon Arts and Sciences University was renamed Yangon University.
Yangon University celebrated its Diamond Jubilee in a week long celebration. This occured on 1st December 1995. This marked the school's establishment of approximately 75 years.
Yangon University offers undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes. The undergraduate programmes are in Arts, Sciences, and Law. Postgraduate degrees are in three groups, a Doctorate, a Masters, or a diploma.
