The second USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) is an Arleigh Burke-classUSS Lassen (DDG-82), an Arleigh Burke class destroyer. The Arleigh Burke class of guided missile destroyers are built around the Aegis combat system and the SPY-1D multi-function phased array radar. The first ship was commissioned on 4 July 1991. The ship is named in honor of the five Sullivan brothersThe Sullivan Brothers were five siblings who all died during the same incident in World War II, the sinking of the light cruiser USS Juneau (CL-52), the vessel on which they all served. The Sullivans were natives of Waterloo, Iowa. The terrorist group al-Qaida attempted an attack on the Sullivans as a part of the 2000 millennium attack plots. The plan was to load a boat full of explosives and explode in near the Sullivans's hull. However the al-Qaida boat was so overladen that it sank, forcing the attack to be cancelled. Later, al-Qaida tried the same type of attack a second time. They successfully bombed the USS Cole on October 12, 2000.
